Pets that Fit Your Lifestyle

Your lifestyle must be your first consideration in choosing a pet. Different pets have different needs. You need to find a pet that fits well in your daily life. Also, you have to ascertain why and what you want to get from a pet.

If you have other people in the house, you also have to consider their schedules and personalities. For children, a pet needs to be playful and easygoing.

Preparing Your Pets for Air Travel

You may be looking forward to your summer vacation. You search online for flights and accommodations. But, have you considered bringing your pet along?

Things to Remember Before You Fly with Your Pet

Ensure that your pet is familiar with its carrier

Your pet’s carrier must be a permanent fixture in your home. It is not something that you bring out only when you want to travel with your pet. It must be in an area where your pet can see and feel comfortable exploring it.

If you are going on a car ride with your pet, put it inside its carrier. Let your pet experience trips in its carrier. When it is already familiar with its carrier, you can go on and book your dream vacation with your pet.

Ensure that you check the airline’s pet policies.

Some airlines allow carriers inside the plane if they can fit under the seat. But, they only limit the number of carriers. As such, ensure that you book early. If you have a big pet or you missed the allowed number in the cabin, your pet need to fly cargo.

Airports require a certificate of health for your pet.You can ask your veterinarian to issue one. Also, put tag on your pet with your contact numbers on it. Airport security may require you to take your pet out of its carrier. If you have a dog, ensure to put a leash before you pull it out of its carrier.

Considerations during the Flight with Pets

Never leave food or water inside the carrier

Your pet will get wet or muddied. Your best strategy is to have some food in your bag for unexpected delay. To avoid vomiting and accidents, you pet can travel on an empty stomach. Your pet’s veterinarian can prescribe medicine for its motion sickness.

Remain calm

Your pet is nervous during the flight. What you can do is to put its bedding or your dirty shirt inside the carrier to make it feel at home. To soothe its anxiety, you can spray man-made pet scents on its bedding.

Engage your pet

You may be able to keep your pet on your lap during the flight. This is if your pet can remain still. Also, you can pet it inside its carrier.

Checklist for Pet Travel

Research for pet import requirements of your destination country. You need to check if you need to acquire an import permit or a microchip. Some countries require specific vaccinations, Blood Titer Test, and internal parasite tests. You may have to make quarantine arrangements and fill up a manifest cargo.

Schedule visit to your pet’s veterinarian.

Your veterinarian must check your pet’s health before your scheduled flight. If your destination country requires a microchip, have it before you have your pet vaccinated. Also, check for expired rabies vaccination. If the destination country requires testing, discuss it with the veterinarian.

Research on pet-friendly hotels and services.

Ensure that you contact a pet-friendly hotel before you book your flights. Also, check for an animal hospital nearby the hotel in case your pet encounter emergencies. You also need to bring its health records.

Pet Readiness Checklist for Singles

We have had those days when we lie on the couch or the bed looking at Instagram feeds of people with cute dogs or cats. We also wonder how good it might feel that we have some companion rather than just lazing around on the weekend with great weather.

We would love to think that we are all ready for a furry critter in our homes because we are strong, responsible singles, right? But before we decide on getting one – or two, we need to check if we’re really as ready as we think we are. Here are some important points to consider before going out to get one.

Check what your finances look like

It’s a touchy topic, but yes you need to take a look at that now and what it would look like in the future. Pets are living things, and they require upkeep. Pet food, accessories, and visits to the vet all require money. You have to consider that you already have bills to pay and decide if your current financial situation will allow you to get a pet.

Assess if you’re ready for a change

Getting a pet means that you will add something to your life. And that something is a living, breathing animal. Believe it or not, your life will revolve around your pet because they really can’t take care of themselves.

You would want to mellow down if you’re the party-till-the-break-of-dawn type and get yourself home early because your dog or cat won’t be able to feed itself. Will you be able to take care of another creature besides yourself? Animals need to eat, sleep, and drink. And yes, they poop and pee, too.

Do you have the time?

Aside from lifestyle changes, you need to insert pet time into your daily routine. You might even need to rethink your travel plans because it’s either you will bring your pet with you, or you need to find someone to babysit your pet when you’re away. All pets need regular visits to the veterinarian.

Most pets need play time with their owners too. They get anxious and destructive when they get too bored, or they may even get sick if you don’t give them any attention.

You have the needed space

You need to think about the space your pet will live in. It needs to be big enough for them to be able to play or roam around at least. They really shouldn’t be confined in cages all the time unless they are the birds that would fly away. You need to make sure that your house is escape-proof to save yourself from future headaches of trying to find a lost pet.

And does your apartment allow pets? If yes, what are the restrictions? Some people are forced to give up their pets because they run into trouble with their building manager or their space got too small for their fully-grown pet.

You know it’s not a fad

A lot of pets get abandoned because they looked cute in pictures but proved to be a lot of work in real life. Some buy certain pets because a popular actor has one or they looked cool in movies. You need to really know if you are getting a pet for the companionship rather than just having something to show off on social media. If they look cute to you when they’re babies, they should still look cute to you when they’re fully-grown.

Owning a pet takes a lot of love, work, and dedication. Successful and responsible pet owners have such beautiful pictures on social media because they have invested a lot of time and emotion into taking care of them. So if you have given these points considerable thought and you believe you have them down pat, then you just might be ready to get yourself a lifelong companion.

Spend Time with Your Pet

Bonding with your pet is a lifelong commitment. You maintain that bond by ensuring that you make time for your pet. You spend time with your family and friends, in your school or office. When you go home, spend time with your pet.

Provide Identification for your Pet

If you have a dog, ensure that it has a collar with present identification at all times. Your pet must have proper identification so that it can be returned to you if it gets lost. Without identification, your pet will be in an overcrowded shelter for homeless pets.

Spay and Neuter

Due to pet overpopulation, multitudes of pets are euthanized yearly. You contribute to this problem if you do not have your pet, especially your dog, neutered or spayed. In case, you want to breed your dog or any pet, ensure that you are a responsible breeder.

Pets may have unknown genetic histories. If you do not understand proper breeding, you may have pets with health problems without knowing it. To save your pet’s life, a viable option is to have it neutered.

Be a Responsible Breeder

In case, you want to be a pet breeder, you must abide by the right protocols. You cannot unhealthy and low-quality pets. You can get in touch with a reputable breeder who can help you breed your pet. You need to follow breeding standards.

Make Your Pets Healthy

If you want to have healthy pets, ensure that you provide fresh water and quality food. These pets must also have a comfortable shelter for their mental and physical well being. Have them do regular exercises. Unlike humans, pets cannot show illness or pain. Thus, ensure that you bring them to the veterinarian regularly. As they say, prevention is better than cure.

Train Your Pets

To maintain good relationships with other people, ensure that you train your pets. If they are well-behaved, your neighbors, friends, and other family members will not get upset. In case of incidents, injuries, or accidents caused by your pet’s misbehavior, you must be responsible for them.

Respect Other People

If you and your pet go out of the house, you must ensure to have it in a cage or on a lease. You must supervise it to ensure that it does not wander around the neighborhood. If you have a dog, its continuous barking will annoy your neighbors. Pick up your pet’s poop at once and dispose of it properly.

How Raw Meat can be Harmful to Your Pets

If you have been feeding your pets raw meat, you must be aware of the possible dangers your pets, and even you may face. Researchers analyzed 35 commercially-available raw-meat cat and dog foods. They discovered that 86% of these foods have possible dangerous bacteria.

According to BMJ’s Vet Record, dog and cat foods in the Netherlands were subjects of the study. Raw-meat diets are popular around the world, but there is no evidence that such foods have health benefits. In fact, according to numerous studies, they may have potential risks.

The Research Findings about Raw Meat in Pet Food

According to Utrecht University researcher and veterinarian Paul Overgaauw, people can also get sick from parasites and bacteria found in raw meat products. They may even be shedders and carriers of these pathogens.

Cross-contamination can occur during food preparation, or when cleaning the food bowls. Also, direct contact with infected animals poses a higher risk. A person may get sick when his infected pet licks his hands or face, or when he cleans up his pet’s waste.

In the research of Overgaauw and his group, they discovered that frozen pet products have bones, raw meat, animal by-products from duck, lamb, beef, chicken, horse, and other ingredients.

Research findings showed that 40% of the tested pet-food products have high levels of E. coli bacteria. In 23% of the products, the researchers found traces of E. coli 0157, a dangerous strain of bacteria that wreaked havoc in North America because of a lettuce-based outbreak. 43% of the samples had listeria bacteria, while 20% of them had salmonella bacteria.

11% of the products had Sarcocystis cruzi parasite while 6% of the samples had Toxoplasma gondii parasite. Sarcocystis cruzi is harmful to farm animals. Toxoplasma gondii causes illnesses in humans and cats in the United States. In fact, it causes mental illness to people who have cats.

Researchers said that even though the number of products tested was low, these raw-meat pet diets were contaminated by various parasitic and bacterial pathogens. Other studies showed that animals which ate raw-meat diets were more likely to have antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Convenience of Buying Raw-Meat Pet Food vs. Preparing Own Pet Food

In Europe and the United States, commercially-available raw-meat pet products have different kinds of bones, organs, and meat. Sometimes, they also had fruits or vegetables. Pet owners may like the convenience that these foods offer. They do not have to prepare raw food for their cats and dogs.

Aside from contamination and risk of infection, these raw-meat diets available in the market do not provide balanced and complete nutrients for the animals to stay healthy and to grow. According to Overgaauw, pet owners have the freedom to decide which food is better for their pets. But, Overgaauw believes that each of these products must have warning labels.

Education is important for pet owners. Pet-food companies, pet stores, and veterinarians must education these pet owners about proper food handling and personal hygiene. Ultimately, these pet owners must make an informed decision not only for their pets but for themselves as well.

It will lessen the cost you will be having once the veterinarian sees ahead of time the sickness that your pet may be having. Moreover, it will eliminate the possibility of major problems later on that may let you spend more expensively.

2. Be aware of your pet’s behavior

Where Pets Are Allowed: Support Dogs

A small concern when people have pets is that they will not be able to take them out wherever they would like, so at times they may feel restricted to where they can go with them. It may also be a let down if they wanted to spend time out with their pet, knowing they can only go to a few available places, such as out dining or shopping. This restriction is usually for safety precautions, and when it involves food, maybe even sanitary reasons. No store owner will want to be liable or have to worry about someone’s pet acting out or attacking another customer. This could potentially give them a bad reputation as an outcome or the customer may retaliate towards them for allowing pets within their store. It all depends on where and what guidelines must be followed. But, surprisingly there are a significant amount of places that will allow owners to bring in their pets. A majority are actual pet stores, such as Petco, but some also include Nordstrom, Macy’s, TJ Maxx, the Apple Store, Lush cosmetics and also Bass Pro Shop. Though, there be a few franchises that might specifically prohibit animals. It’s always best to check beforehand whether they are allowed or not.

Now this limitation changes for those who have support dogs, which require certification for the dog. They are usually utilized when a person has certain medical conditions or impairments, as well as for anxiety. This would be known more as an emotional support dog but there are also guide dogs, hearing dogs, seizure alert, diabetic alert, and even severe allergy alert dogs. This requires training dog for these specific tasks and having them registered. Most will recognize them because of the vest or harness that they usually wear to designate that they are there for medical purposes, though they are not required to wear one. These dogs are usually required to be permitted wherever their handler is, such as in restaurants, hotels, hospitals or shopping centers. They are usually even allowed to ride with their handler in an ambulance, if for any reason it is needed. These dogs are not restricted to only a select amount of places as would a normal pet.

Now, there is a certain type of etiquette required when these dogs are out in public with their handlers and many people may not realize it when they see them. Though, the dogs usually need to stay in close proximity to the handler, not leaving their side for any reason. It may be hard to resist petting such an adorable dog, but it is important not to distract the service dog in any way. They are there to do a job pretty much, and petting them or interacting with them may hinder their senses to help their handler. It is possible to ask the handler directly if it’s okay to pet the dog, but most often than not they will say no and it’s not out of rudeness.

Why You Should Pay More Attention to Your Pet

Best pet care practices

Is your pet acting out? Are they constantly destroying your home with their claws or their jaws? Do they chew up your furniture, shoes, get into the trash can, or even use your home for their own personal bathroom? Chances are, you have shaken your head yes to at least one of these scenarios. Every pet owner goes through this at some point, and the behavior must be eradicated for it to become less of an issue—otherwise your pet will continue to act out and be destructive.

Most pet owners are aware that if a pet is exhibiting weird behavior, or even just acting out, sometimes this is a medical issue. Your first step should be to take your pet to the vet to rule out any medical conditions that are causing their irregular behavior. Once you rule out any medical conditions, you can now rule the issue as a behavior problem.

You can spend money on a pet trainer, pet day care, a sitter, and so on. Those of us who have done so, know this becomes costly and just not reasonably feasible. However, how many of us tried paying more attention to our pets as a way to eradicate their irregular behavior?

Drop the screen and pick up the leash

In today’s day and age, we have become focused on technology; spending hours a day on our phones, in front of the computer, or in front of the T.V. Meanwhile, our pets sleep, eat, and go out (or use the litter box). Nothing more or nothing less. During this time, your pet will become bored. They, like humans, love entertainment as well. When your pet becomes bored, they are more likely to become destructive and act out. This is why you should pay more attention to your pet.

One reason you should pay more attention to your pet is because it provides healthy entertainment for both of you. You are no longer staring at a screen and sitting. Instead, you will be up and moving, waving a cat wand, throwing a tennis ball, walking your pet, and so on. Pet’s love to do things with their humans, and playing is one of them. Not only does this benefit your pet, but it benefits you as well. You are now moving around, instead of sitting still—something that is good for your overall health.

Another reason you should pay more attention to your pet is that paying attention to them establishes a strong bond. That strong bond will eventually eradicate their abnormal behavior. Pets have a companionship type of relationship with their humans. In other words, if you have their back, they have yours. This phenomenon is experience with pets who have a solid relationship with their humans. By paying more attention to your pets, you will experience a solid relationship and less misbehavior.

Pets are, in a way, kind of like children. They will do what you let them get away with, and will continue until that behavior is stopped. Our pets want nothing more than our companionship and our attention. By paying more attention to your pet, you can restore your home to its former glory, build a strong relationship with a creature that will forever be loyal to you, and you will experience a heightened sense of happiness as well.
